OMC 4.3L I/O Trouble getting in gear

I have a 1991 Caravelle with a 4.3L OMC Cobra. Lately it has been tough getting it in gear. Specifically, it seems to grind quite a bit and doesn't catch unless I push the throttle further forward. This tends to cause the boat to lurch into gear rather than enter forward slowly. The same problem doesn't seem to occur when going into reverse. Has anyone had this problem and your thoughts on whether this is a major or minor fix? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. Based on what I read it seems like an adjustment is in order. Any tips on how to make such and adjustment?

The site has all of the info you need to make the adjustment. It sounds (reads) a little harder than it is. You should buy a manual, and print out the instructions on stuarts site. The manual will help you in pulling the outdrive if you haven't done it before. Then use the site to make the adjustments.

what is stuart's site? If I have a mechanic do it, is this an involved job or is it easy and cheap?

It's the one I gave the link to. Scroll down to where you see this:

Here is the legendary how-to-adjust-your-Cobra-shift-linkage document (what your dealer never told you, or didn't know):

You need to read all of the info and read all of the links that are on the site. Then you can decide if you want to tackle it or have a mechanic do it. I would not expect it to be cheap if you have a mechanic do it.

Yes and no on the involved. It will mean removing the outdrive, which isn't hard getting off but can be a bear putting back on for some people.I have removed my cobra drive several times and back on with out any problems. There are some very crucial measurments. If the mechanic isn't familar with omc cobras i would stear clear of them. Also you want to check and make sure you have a red shift cable and not the old original black one. Most problems in shifting with the Cobras start or come from the shift cable. As maruar says, the link he supplied with give you everything you need to know about a cobra's shifting.

I would also say.Do a search on iboats forums for Cobra drives and adjustments and you will find a world of info on it.

Well, yesterday it got worse.....won't go into forward gear at all. Reverse works. Do you still think it's an adjustment?

Maybe an adjustment, but I'd guess (and I emphasise 'guess', 'cause I'm pretty much of a beginner myself) it's a bad shift cable or something else in the shift system. Like marunr says, read through Stuart's online site regarding Cobra shift issues. You might start trying the five point adjustment on Stuart's site That is pretty easy and doesn't require removing the outdrive, but it assumes that the transom shift cable (and everything in the outdrive) is in good shape and adjusted correctly. If yours won't go into reverse at all, I suspect you've got bigger problems than the five point adjustment will fix, but might be worth a try since it's pretty easy.

Like Phil said, if you take it to a mechanic, make sure they have Cobra experience! And don't just take their word for it. Alot of shops don't yet some will still say they do, and if you take it to one like that, you stand a chance of them not only not permanently correcting the problem, but possibly making things worse in the long run.

Ask a couple of questions that would show they know what they're talking about. OMC certification would be nice, but if not, learn a little about the Cobra from Stuart's site and ask some questions that would reveal what they know about Cobras. Like maybe ask them what the difference is w.r.t. how you change the outdrive oil between a Merc and Cobra. (might want to ask them as if you're curious, not like you're grilling them). See if they've changed Cobra transom shift cables and ask them what it involves.

If you're gonna have this boat for awhile suggest you get an OMC OEM Service Manual and OMC Parts Catalogue (can usually find them on eBay) rather than a Clymers or Seloc manual. A bit more expensive, but worth it.

b.t.w., you shouldn't have to worry about having one of the old shift cables, OMC found the problem and started using the new ones in '88 I believe. But yours still might be worn out and need replacement.

Good luck!
