Hello Thinking. It is now time to grt rid of the OMC 460!ford in my grady ,had to pull the motor because the shift tube is leaking . The question I have is are the current motor mounts close to what is needed to go with a Mercruiser 454 ,or would I have to make new mounts in the boat ,I know some have done the swap and need to know if I would have to put in new mounts in thanks JD

Howdy,

Yeah. I swapped out my 460/Kobra for a 1997 454/Bravo..... pretty easy (I assume you're doing a complete OMC--> Mercruiser swap?)

I cannot say you have to relocate if you're just going to a 454 with the King Cobra drive. (I can't remember if OMC ever mated a Dog-clutch Cobra to a 454. If they didn't, there won't be a flywheel housing) If it's a cone clutch drive (approx 90-91 model) There WAS a 454 in front of that one but it has OTHER "problems".....

If you're going to a Mercruiser,

You will likely have to relocate the engine side mounts, or at least drill new holes for the lag-bolts since the 454 mounts are in a slightly different place.

You'll also have to drill 2 additional holes in the transom for the drive but the other gimbal mount holes are in the correct place.

Also, if you have Thru-hull exhaust, and you want to continue to use it, you might have to fool around with some hose to match it up. I didn't keep my Capts Call installed so I stayed with the Y-pipe & thru-prop...... Everybody hated the open exhaust anyway.......TOO loud!

You'll want to install the gimbal mount first, bolt the engine to the transom plate (hanging ) , to locate where the side mounts need to go. Get the alignment as close as possible before you drill the holes for the lags........It'll just make alignment easier when you align the engine to install the drive.

Regards,

Rick

I stand corrected on OMC 454. They DID do it in 1988 (Model 744AMRGDP) The 454 flywheel housing is #0912838 It would be a wrecking yard part though!
