try loosening the nuts that hold the drive on.2-3 turns.if it shifts easier than its the guide pin behind the shift mechanism on the upper gear case.they will work outward.give it a tap back in place and try it.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Have you ever even worked on an OMC Cobra?
First thing I would do is remove the forward shift cable where it meets the lower shift cable at your engine to see if its the control or the lower shift cable. More than likely its the lower. When was the last time you had the drive off? The cavity in the drive where the bellcrank lives can get full of sludge over time and restrict the cable movement. More than likely, its just time to replace the lower cable though.
