Has anyone ever come acrossed an issue with the engine failing to idle and creating black smoke? The only way I have been able to get it to start and run for more then 10seconds is to put it in neutral and set it at about 500-650 rpm then when I goto neutral it dies again almost like the engine is starving.

Hello,

You'll get black smoke if your mix is too rich. Basically, your fuel/air ratio is too rich or your plugs are not burning the fuel/air mix effectively (or both). If you haven't pull your plugs and check them, you should try that first. Are they black/wet? If so, they may not be creating enough spark. Clean them and check/reset plug gap...try running engine again. If that doesn't fix it...check your wires, distributor cap, rotor etc..... If you are able to rule out electrical...then try adjusting your fuel/air mix screw on the carb, only do 1/4 turns at a time...and test. If no real change...you may need to consider rebuilding the carb.
