OMC 5.0L Shift cable adjust

Okay, I read all of the horror stories on here and am now scared to death. I have a 1988 OMC Cobra 5.0L that is soon going to be making it's first trip with me. What is the no B.S. way to do the shift adjustments. I have a chilton's manual but now I read that this may not be correct. So what's the deal? The shift cables that I have in the boat right now are Red. Thanks, KEP
