Anyone know what make a 1987 OMC 5.4L engine is?
Is it a ford or chrysler?
Also is there a schematic or manual somewhere on the net showing the internal workings of the outdrive
THX.

Are you getting this off of the valve cover? If so it is a 5 litre 4V. The 4V means 4 barrel.

The engine is most likely either going to be a 5.0L o 5.7L, both GM (small block chevrolet).

You can look at a very rudimentary schematic of the drive in the parts listings on Evinrude;
http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=36pkq028tojlsht40daad59tm5&catalog_id=0&siteid=1

A factory manual would be much better. But....honestly, if you're having problems, and need to repair the the inner workings of the drive, you would be best served getting a pro to look at it. Not a project for a back-yard tinkerer to take on.

I just want to see where the threaded part of that do not remove screw may have gone and what damage it could do if I just plug the hole.As I said in another thread it,s on the port side of the outdrive housingabout 4" up from the hydraulic tilt cylinder.I.d take it to the marina, but it,s quite difficult since I,m quite a ways away and don,t know when I,d get it back.

Howdy,

The "threaded part" is just a nut-plate. It most likely just fell off and dropped inside. (you must remove the drive to look.......) That area is raw water pump discharge and goes to the gimble, through the transom and to the t-stat housing or heat exchanger (if closed cooled) If there's an oil or power-steering cooler, if it made it through the hose, it might lodge there.

If it got through the hose (not very likely) then it made it to the t-stat housing (or it's still in the hose someplace between the gimbal mount and t-stat housing)

I think you can still buy that ("Do Not Remove") screw. Get one, replace the nut-plate, and epoxy it in place....... I think you can still get the "badge" too. epoxy it onto the screw so no one else can remove it!!

Good luck,

Rick

THX I was just trying to find out if the backing plate for the do not remove screw can be left where it fell inside.
I,d just like to plug the hole and leave it.

You should NOT do that. It could plug your raw water supply hose and cause overheats.

If you haven't pulled the drive recently (to check gimble bearing, U-joints, alignment etc) NOW would be a good time to do it.

I guess what everyone is saying,is leave the backing plate where it fell inside. Plug the hole, and save the hassle of taking it on a trailer to have the mechanic take it out.ANYONE know what it,s made of? it,s not magnetic,I tried that when I could see it.

You don't have to re-register when you go to a different computer, you just use the same username and password.
