Threads are stripped off the retainer bolt, the steel threads in the pan are good, I couldn't locate a new retainer bolt anywhere so I'm going to have try and fix this one or make one I guess, does anyone know the thread size?

Nope,................

Chevy's use a 1/2" Fine thread,...... Ford, I don't know......

Btw,..........

Search for a Banjo Fitting ,+ you might find something...........
Once you figure out the thread count,+ size of course.......

Unfortunately, the thread size of the OMC pans are not the necessarily the same for a Ford or Chevy and they chnged them in different years depending on the dipstick hardware that was being used. The dipstick connects to the drain plug of the pan. If you want to replace that part, you will have to make sure you get the part from the exact year engine.

Autozone carrys a vast assortment of replacement oil pan plug bolts. When I purchase my replacement for our minivan there were more than a dozen options in front of me.

The problem is that is just not a plug but incorporates the dipstick with other assorted parts.

My '84 leaked a tiny bit from new, just enough to make a mess in the bilge constantly.
I drained the oil, removed the port exh. manifold, removed dipstick & fittings, took it to a hydraulics shop.
Replaced with same size ss fittings and put it all back really tight. No leaks since.

I fixed it today! The thread size is a 9/16 NF I was able to build-up the threaded end with braze and just ran it with a 9/16 NF die it came out really well and the braze I think is actually harder than the raw brass here's a pic of the finished product.

Ayuh,...........

The picture is a little blurry,..... But ConGrats anyways........

Laying a bead of Bronze on the side of that fitting is quite a Feat.........
It's Really Easy to end up with a puddle of Brass when doing that on a Hollow fitting..........
Believe Me,....... I Know.........
Did you insert some sort of mandrel in it to help control the Heat,..??......

Excellent Repair,...................................;)

Re: Omc 5.8L Oil pan drain retainer

I did nothing special just clamped the head in vise and finessed the braze to follow the heat just to the point of cherry red, I did it in like 4 steps letting it cool somewhat between runs, Oh and just for the record the thread didn't fit the pan oops must have been 14mm. Not to worry nothing the 9/16 tap couldn't cure, it's all good now everything tightened up nice with a new seal against the pan, I haven't put any oil in it yet, I greased the tap to catch the shavings and probed with a magnet just to make sure the pan was clean. Now after all that somebody will come up with a source for the bolt for about 5 bucks and make me sick.
