I think the oval ports came around in 95. I could be wrong but service bulletins seem to keep 86-94 motors together.

the oval port came out very late 1992, and yes that were service bulletins for these motors.
it comes in 3 sizes 50hp ,60hp and 70hp, .

I always thought that they came out in 95 because the cooling system modification was because of the bridgeport design. Here is that service bulletin for them

#2276 Rev 1 relocating the water pump indicator covers
1986-1994 70 hp
1987-1994 65 hp
1989-1994 60 hp
Hope that helps

All 50hp 3 cylinders are oval as are all 60/70hp late 1993 and up motors.

for the 1993 model year omc put out 3 new engines in the 56 cu in oval port, a 50hp a 60 hp and a 70hp. .
the service bulletin about moving the tell tale was for the Bridgeport and early oval ports.
the service bulletin about drilling the block inside the exhaust and getting a new cover and gasket was for the oval ports as far as I know.
this is the diagram for the drilling of the hole.

I know it also then needs new updated cover and gasket to save the middle cylinder from premature wear.

You didn't know what need to be moved ? the diagram above is for the oval port 56 cu in engines from late 92 onwards, all three of them the 50hp 60hp and 70hp.
these hole to be drill is done once the cover is off and the hole is to be drilled into the block but just through the outer wall.
on these engines it seems the middle cylinder never got enough cooling at a certain area. by this drilling the water gets around the back of the middle cylinder better.
I presume it was something bad in the lost foam castings from which these blocks came from.
older 56 bridgeports were mainly sandcast blocks and not affected..

there is and was a lot of confusion of the oval port and Bridgeport blocks, especially as look almost the same on the outside apart from a few minor things, .
lots of parts I think were just used up at the factory, as I have 2 x 1995 60hp evinrude's,
now going by the serial numbers is strange because the newer engine (later serial number ) hass a few older parts than the older engine !!! yes very weird.
I think it depended on what parts bins they worked from on the day.

What # is the service bulletin for that modification. Because the service bulletin I have doesn't even put you in the ballpark of where it goes.

This modification is not about moving the telltale !---It is an internal hole to get more cold water to the troublesome # 2 cylinder.

what would be real good is if we could get all the service bulletins for the 56 cu in engines, especially the oval ports.
would be nice to see the actual bulletins and pics if possible.
there is a bulletin about changing the thermostat covers and springs too. .
both my engines of same year came with different thermostat covers, one was the later cover and one the older style.
from the outside there is almost zero difference, its only when trying to fit the springs the difference is noticed.
