I have a omc 800 outdrive that i have rebuilt and raplaced all the seals and such. It ran great last year but this spring it is leaking from the steering gear in the front of the upper gearcase. Is this a common problem. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

When you say leaking are you saying you see lube coming out or you are saying water is coming in and seeping into the bilge? There is a seal hear and I doubt they changed it. I have a problem with mine allowing some water to seep around it and get into the bilge. I actually have the seal, they do sell a kit and its pretty inexpensive. After I rebuilt mine I noticed it and have been to lazy to fix it. Looks like you will have to pull the upper away from the intermediate to get to it, then there is a clip on the shaft you need to remove and then the gear should come off.

You should have replaced the steering shaft brass bushing at time of resealing the upper. It's a trouble spot.
