Hey guys,

My Omc 800/350 will not go into reverse. On land with muffs it seems to work but I have to have the cable way extended. The pointer on the shift converter has to go way off the scale like an inch to even get the reverse to work on land. When I put it in the water it seemed like it was spinning somewhat at idle but when revved it was slipping. Forward seems to work in the range that it should but now there is huge separation between the two. When I adjusted the cable to get reverse to slip in the water, forward also slipped so I had to readjust back towards forward more so that would engage fully again. The cable going down to the outdrive appears tight with no slack around the bellcrank. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: OMC 800-No Reverse

I am by no means a marine mechanic, but I am learning as I go. I have a very similar problem with my OMC 800. I have a post on here with alot of great replies which you may find useful here is the link for that post.

My reverse was not engageing and my cable was adjusted beyond the mark as well. I pulled the prop, bearing houseing, and snap rings out and pulled the reverse gear out of there. I found the lugs on the reverse gear and the clutch dog were stripped. I will be tackling the job to replace those soon.

Brijoe00, so it was the back side of the clutch after all?

chevy, sounds like a cable issue to me. These things usually go past the scale marker on the shift box when engaging. Don't pay attention to it. Find Nominal neutral and see if that helps (clutch dog is right in the middle of forward and reverse). Then you adjust your shift cable from the shifter. Once neutral is set, you will need to adjust your micro switches so your ESA kicks in at the right time going into gear and going out of gear.

I did adjust the cable to nominal neutral but the problem is that the distance between forward and reverse is very large. Therefore I can get fully into any gear.

Thanks, Ill check out your post right now.

Re: OMC 800-No Reverse

Thats strange, may be a problem in the lower afterall. I would remove the cable form the shift box, then pull the cable to see if it will go into forward, then pull the other end of the cable as far as it will go and see if reverse engages and stays engaged. Can do this with the boat running on muffs, I did. Just remove the prop as a precaution. The ESA won't engage but its not going to hurt it doing it to test it. If the gears are engaging fully then something is out of whack with the shift box, arms and or pulleys. This is about all I can gather.

Another thing I might add is slack in the cable. You say it seems tight at the shift box right? You say bell crank but not sure what that is. You can pull it here towards you and will hear the little teeth notch as you pull it, it should stay and take slack out of the cable.
