omc 800 prop seal

is there a prop seal that keeps the water out? is it hard to change? where else can water get into the lower unit? thanks Andy

You don't say exactly what you have but on virtually every motor there is a seal of some kind around the prop shaft. They do wear out or dry out. Like almost everything else on an outboard, the life of these different parts seem to be very different on all motors. Water can also get in around both the fill hole and the vent hole. There are rubber rings that can easily be replaced on both plugs. There also is gasketing where the lower unit attaches that can leak.

sorry about that I have an OMC 800 stern drive, the gear oil is milky. thanks Andy

I have no experience with stern drives. I would think that the the oil seal around the prop shaft would be about the same idea. If you have the two oil plugs similar to outboards, they, again would be likely culprits. There must be a web page that deals with I/Os where someone could give you solid info. If you can't find one try the good old fashioned library. They probably have some reference type books. Good luck, Granpa
