OMC 800 Sterndrive removal - question

I picked up my parts donor boat this weekend.
81 18 ft Tempest 3.8l OMC 800 Sterndrive. Model # 982566

This afternoon I stripped it out pretty much except for power plant and drive.
I have a manual for the electric shift drives but not for the cable shift units.

Since the cost of the cables seems to be very high and I would rather not learn by trial and error, can anyone give me needed pointers for sterndrive removal relating to cable removal?
Is it pretty much the same as the electric shifts electric harness removal?
Actual unbolting is no bigdeal but cable routing, unclipping, etc.... is the details I would like to have.

Also one other issue I had was removal of the steering assembly. It has the OMC "Power Pointer" steering on it. It would appear that I need to knock the shaft out towards the drum unit after removal of the wheel, roll pin and pointer gear assembly. Again this looks straight forward but doesn't seem to want to come apart. Hidden clips, pins, tight splines? Picture shows how far I have it.

Thanks in advance

GML, you need to disconnect the shift cables in the converter box. A manual would help as there is a tension function that has to be dealt with and the details elude me right now. (big help, huh?) You also want to pay attention to the routing of each cable thru the box for future installation.

Also remove the retainer clip on the outside of the intermediate housing and pry, wiggle the bushing, around the cable, out of the hole. Now you can pull the cable back out. They can be a bit tough as the hole tends to close down with corrosion. You need to have the outdrive off and propped to the side, out of your way.

One the steering cable drum, there is a hole in the rear drum edge that has a slot head set screw that affixes the drum to the shaft. Pull that screw out, then pull the shaft and gear out from the rear. It would be good to have some help so you can pay attention to all spacers, washers and bushings as the shaft comes out. Whatever you do, do not diassemble the cables from the drums. This would also be a good time to force a good aerosol lubricant down each cable way, rotating the cable from lock to lock.

Re: OMC 800 Sterndrive removal - question

1. Take the battery or batteries out of the boat!
2. Take the cable and lever arm off the shift lever atop the shift coverter rear of the engine where cables meet
3. take 4 screws off the panel and lift the cover off - take out the black plastic guide in there
4. remove the little cable retainer clips
5. reach with your left hand around behind the "panel" and grab the 2 spring loaded pawls and pull them back toward the transom, and push the cable housing into the panel box (shift converter it's called)with your right hand
6. Unwind the bare cables off the guides and slide the cable out of the converter
7. Eyeball the hole where the cable exits the boat - Spray the cable sheath inside the boat and outside the boat with PB blaster or similar penetrant- let it sit 30 minutes
8. remove the clip that retains the cable on the outside of the intermediate housing deep in there where the cable exits the rear of it (1/2" socket I think)
9. 2 people - 1 push on the cable from inside, 1 pull it from outside....if it don't come - more penetrant and time! It's $400 don't tear it!
10. Mark your ball gears with paint how they are indexed to each other so they will go back with their original mates
11. pull the water directors and steering bumpers off, remove the 4 cap screws (9/16" socket) - drive is off - about 90 pounds

electric manual should show that steering- it all disconnects from the back side - the helm part stays together as I recall. I've never had to knock the shaft out to remove or install. I think that would break it.

Excellent!
Thanks gents for the info on the drive and cable removal. I know they are $$$$ so having correct steps 1st just makes it less likely anything gets over looked.

Yes kjdkjd knocking the shaft out looks like it would be possible but with the plastic gears there I was pretty darn sure that wasn't the correct route. For now the sawzall may be used to cut around it and speed up the disassembly process, with spliting the 2 peices left for the warmth and another day. Darn floor is so wet laying on my back getting soaked is no fun!

Today maybe a day off working on it with the weather crappy and such. Garage is full of parts and in need of a sort out.

3 piles I think:
1 for stuff 4 sale (lot's in this pile incl a couple complete 120's and 2 electric shift drives)
1 to keep for me and
the last to the dump!

BTW this Tempest was one heck of a sweet deal.
I am going to use everything off this to go onto the Cobia. Steering, controls (with trim) gauges, wiring harness etc.... Everything is in MINT shape.
Hull is crap and interior is definetly junk.
I am even going to keep the trailer and sell mine.

Is there any market for windsheilds ??? I have junked a few boats now and I have removed the glass from each but not sure it is worth it.

:D

hehe............
No I thought it was cool so I am going to put it on the Cobia.

Funny the steering is absolutely the only thing still left on the Cobia.
Everything including hooks, trim EVERYTHING is off of it and now I have to take the steering off too.
Guess that makes it official. It is now seriously a complete strip and rebuild.:D

Hey kjdkjd you have some pics of your Grew ??? I assume that is it in your Avatar. Looks like a nice peice.

Nice kjdkjd.
I like the name, I need to come up with something different for my boat.

The name previously was "The SS BEE-YACHT-CH".
Wife and kids say it must go regardless of any superstitions about renaming a boat.

Did you notice a large differance when you went with the 4bbl intake and carb?
I know there is a definite HP gain and I know what it would be like on a car. J
ust curious if you would do it again.

Re: OMC 800 Sterndrive removal - question

Good removal description, kjdkjd.

Only thing I'll add is that I had excellent results by wiping some silicone grease on the cable in the boat just before pulling the drive off. It slipped out (and back in later) like a thick strand of spaghetti.
Don't use dino grease, it may attack the rubber sheath.

Also, slip a 1/4" slot screwdriver between the tensioner pawls and the square housing, it's less frustrating to release the tension.
