Had a bad shift cable, replaced it. Checked cable from console to engine, OK. Did center out-of-gear procedure on shift converter box, OK. Put muffs on, ran engine, shifted gears perfectly. Put prop in water, won't shift, chatters, will not go into gear. I'm guessing stripped gears or something else in the lower unit? The loading on the prop is causing something to change.

Disconnect the shift cable coming from the throttle at the adapter box and see if you can shift it manually with the lever back at the adapter box. If it still jumps, I'm afraid you have possible clutch dog / gear troubles.

...disconnect the outdrive cable from the converter box and see if you can shift it by pulling on the cable ends. Now that I think of it that might be a bit hard to do while on the water, but it's worth a try.

NO NO NO.......read Kagee's post again.....leave cable to outdrive connected....just unhook cable that goes to your throttle lever from box and shift right from the adapter box itself..if it shifts ok, then you need to adjust

I see da light. That is correct. Once you unhook the cable from the throttle/shifter the converter lever will give the full range of outdrive cable movement. Me so sorry. :(
