This is a early nineties omc 90 in a turbojet.I replaced regulator with an oem new old stock last year with new cdi wiring harness.Has ran fine.We took it out a couple of months ago still ran fine no problems.Went out yesterday, cranked it up a little sluggish and then acted like it was on 3 cylinders then 4.Started to plane out and within 5 seconds acted like it was out of fuel.Pull back throttle less than 3k rpms and it would run again.Did this four times until it didn't want torun like a misfire. We anchor to shore ,raised the hood and the main wiring harness had melted, regulator was so hot couldn't touch it ,the tach went to zero.We sat for an hour, cranked back up but wasa still running rough, tach came back on.Loaded it up and went home.Did the new regulator get a short and back fed from battery?Did it burn up stator ,coils or power packs?I odered a new cdi regulator replacement and see if I can salvage harness.Any ideas? Thanks

I wonder if a loose battery cable or bad cable with high resistance at either end would do this? Thinking loose ground.

I replaced both positive and negative cables last year.Everything was tight.

My guess would be a bad stator is what caused the initial failure in the first place. Have you checked to see if you are getting 13v+ to the battery when the motor is running?

If you start the motor, let it warm up until the mis starts, and then unplug the yellow wires from the stator to the rectifier and the miss clears, you certainly have another failed rectifier. I have seen this happen many times where there the recto/regulator is replaced only to fail again because the stator is crapping out.

What is the model # of this motor?

This was a replacement engine years ago when the original 115 blew up.This is a flatback crossflow.I haven't checked voltage yet since the harness is melted. It is not completely gone just melted some from power board to the big plug in on harness.Wires from regulator or wires from solenoid, power pack, coils didn't get hot.The regulator is 585195.

Ok ..I rempved the plastic wiring loom that's was melted. No wires where melted at all.So I blew air through pee hole and all of sudden water started draining from exhaust. So I hooked up water ,started the engine, turn water on and all ports where blowing water, ran a temp check on all cylinders and they where 118 to 124 degrees.check temp on regulator and it started at 130 degrees and after a minute went to 116 and stayed there.Idled good, revved up good no miss or anything.
checked voltage and it started at 12.9 and after a few minutes at idle it was 13.5.Even though the alarm didn't go off I guess the port was clogged some and the heat from the engine melted the harness loom.I guess it is time for another run.The alarm does churp when you first turn on key.

Those water-cooled rectifier/regulators will get hot as heck if there is no cooling water all the way to the top of the block inside.
