I'm sure this has been asked but, didn't find a thread when I searched. What substitutes are available at an Auto parts store for "OMC Adhesive M" and "OMC Gasket Sealing Compound"?

Can I use #2 Permatex Form-a-gasket in place of the OMC Gasket sealing compound?

I'm changing an impeller on a '91 Evinrude 115.

According to the OMC manual I need to put the adhesive on the "seal ring groove at each of the 4 ribs". Would the #2-permatex hold it in well enough or do I really need adhesive too?

Thanks,
John

Gasket sealing compound, the gasket solution that has a small brush attached to its screw off cap, and the identical sealant replacing OMC Adhesive which is either Marprox Sealer 1000 or Boat Armor Sealer 1000 can be purchased at any automotive parts type store, perhaps even Wal*Mart, K-Mart, etc.

Believe it or not I've called several of the Auto Supplies here in the DFW metro area and they don't carry the 3M 847 or the marpox sealer 1000. I called Bass Pro/Tracker marine and get nothing but the answeriing machine in their service department. I was planning on doing the impeller today since I received the kit Thursday. Otherwise I would order 3M 847 off the net. A marine repair center and they said the Permatex Form a Gasket #2 will work. With the price of gas at $3 a gallon I don't want to drive 50 miles to get a $5 tube of sealer. I was hoping someone else would have had some experience with it.

If I shouldn't use the Permatex I need to know because I'm starting to pull the lower unit.

Thanks,
John

If that's the hardening Permatex, I've used it many times to hold the O ring in the groove during assembly. Don't let it get inside the pump housing though.

It's the non-hardening kind #2. I've used it many times for car water pumps or valve cover gaskets. I like the non-hardening part because if you ever have to take it back off it's easier to clean up for the next gasket.

You're talking about the o-ring seal on the housing right. Hi-Tack will work. Just takes a small dab in each spot.

Non harding gets my vote when things harden they shrink and we are talking about a cut hair will make the difference in a leak weather it is air or water preasure. Wal Mart here has all the above listed items.

Did you inquire about the "Boat Armor" brand of Sealer 1000?

There are times when a phone call is a waste of time, and sometimes even asking personel a question face to face.

I have on occasion asked someone in a store if they have a certain something of other, and while they're in the process of saying that they do not, I'm reaching over and removing it from a peg board hook.
