The electric pump is a temporary thing just until I get the new mechanical pump I've ordered. But I will try some gas down the carb. However I know the engine is firing with the starting fluid so it must not getting gas through the carburetor right???

You are correct, you now have a fuel/carb issue.

A 10 year old can rebuild a carb. It's very easy. Order a carb kit and get it done. You'll need compressed air and patience to do it right, but never fear. The instructions are in the factory service manual, and usually come with the kit, too. Follow them, then adjust it by the manual. It'll run great.

Getting it clean is very, very important. There are tiny passages throughout that need to be free and clear. It should look brand new when you're done.

In my experience, those people who say they rebuilt a carburetor many times mean they took it apart and sprayed it with carb cleaner then put it back together. They didn't order a kit. Lazy.
