Am looking at a used boat (4Winns) with an OMC Cobra 4.3 liter engine. I'd welcome your comments - I know that OMC has gone out of business. Should I avoid this engine? Have they given good service compared to Mercruiser engines? The boat is in good condition but want to be sure about the engine before I go any further with my interest. Thanks in advance!!!

Re: OMC Cobra 4.3 L - Thumbs up or down?

I own a 93 190 with OMC package, unfortunatly we bought from a so called employee friend, and discovered after a couple really good runs with the boat that the block was cracked. I had no problem with the OMC package. After 1994 OMC was purchased by volvo. I have gotten every part I ever needed for my 4-winns. Finding a Mechanic is a little tougher but they are out there. Your better off to work any minor bugs your self if you buy. The only thing about the cobra (if that is the outdrive on the boat) keep the shift cable adjusted. I Love the four winns design and can turn a 180 at 45 MPH they handle that good.

I own an OMC 4.3L and seems to run great. Have a dealer that still will do service on it for me and as long as it is maintained should keep you happy.

1987 MonArk 4.3L OMC Cobra.....
