I have a 1986 3.0 Cobra and would like to change my gear oil for winter storage. Can I use Walmart SAE 85W140 gear oil? It says it's good for marine use. My Clymer manual says OMC Cobra Hi Vis oil (what's in the Cobra oil? Do I absloutely have to put in an OMC product to be safe?

Also, motor oil recommendation is SAE 30 SF oil. Is SL rated oil ok? (SAE 30 SL) ...SL rating came after SF rating....ratings keep getting stricter over time. My guess is SL oil is better and covers SF oil requirements.

I ran the Hi Vis in my Cobra for years and than changed to Ultra HPF It is recommended for Cobras also, but I was told it was even better by many. Napa auto sells both by a company called CRC. Cheaper than the OMC brand

I also used the HiVis and just switched to the HPF at the recommendation of my local OMC shop. For motor oil I use Chevron Delo 400 straight 30 wt. If you have never drained and refilled a Cobra, you must follow the procedure in the manual, or you may wind up with an air bubble trapped inside, which will rise to the top and it will then be underfilled, which will wipe out the upper gears. Remove the top plug (on top of drive with dipstick), then remove bottom plug on lower unit (foward end of the "bullet"). Also remove the plug a little above that just below the cavitation plate. That is actually the fill hole. You have to get a pump that screws into the gear oil bottles. Replace the bottom most plug. Place the top plug with dipstick in the hole, do not screw in (allows a little extra fill to make up for air bubbles). Screw pump into hole just below cavitation plate. Pump slowly, should take about 2 qts. Check with top plug with dipstick. When full thread in top plug, quickly remove pump fitting, replace plug there. Then recheck level with top plug screwed in. Let it sit over night. Then crank engine (don't start it, and make sure to do this with the muffs on w/water to not burn impeller). Then check again. All this is to see if any air escaped and you may need to add some thru the top hole (top of drive). If OK,start engine on muffs let it run a while, and re-check. After running it the level may be a little high, but that is OK, just let it sit and re-check. Easier to do than to describe!! But you must do it right!!

I have 1992 OMC Cobra and have always used Walmarts Supertech Marine 80-90w in the lower unit. Works good for me and I have never had any problems.

Since we're giving our .02 worth, here's mine..
Synthetic is the only oil to use. 64oz is a small amount of oil and I would spend the 6.00 per quart for Amsoil any day. I use
SAE 80W-90 Synthetic Marine Lower Unit Gear.
20-50 Synth in the engine.

I've spoken with many engineers in the gear industry and synthetic is the way to go. Harley Davidson just recently began marketing a H-D version with their name on it.

You right though that just about any Gear Lube will work, but even if synthetic extended the life by only 50 hours, hopefully that's about the time I sell it.

I fully agree with Andrew T. Amsoil is by FAR the best! Ive been using it for years and It is AWESOME!!! Amsoil has just come out with a new marine oil specifically for inboards!! If you do happen to get moisture in your outdrive it will protect better than conventional oils, Maybe enough to save your lower unit until you find out!!

LubeDude
