My OMC 5.7 V8 Engine blocks cooling system was not fully drained for winter storage and developed a hairline crack on the block below the manifold.

Can this crack be welded or patched and if so, does the engine have to be removed in order to weld it?

How difficult is it to remove the engine?

Is there a local repair shop in the Toronto area?

You can probably weld it depending on where the weld is. if its on a cooling passage or elsewhere. Depending on how much room you have to get a welder in the area. the welder may need to grind the crack. I woudl pull the motor since you have one crack there may be others.
I have heard of people welding up a crack in a block but its not normally done

Re: OMC Cobra Engine Block

There's a product called JB Weld. I've read some of the testimonials and this stuff seems to be pretty good at doing what you want to do. I've never used the gray ( block sealer ) before but have the white. Indeed good stuff. As Rob 454 says this is not a common practice but it just might get you through until that shiny, new engine arrives. Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. It's already broke, can't do much more damage to it. http://jbweld.net/products/jbweld.php. There's your link.
