Never did one of these. Anything special about it? Any idea how long it should take? Thanks for the help.

Re: OMC Cobra Impeller Change

I just finished my 87 omc cobra and it was a breeze. Shouldn't take more than an hour, problebly less. I don't know if you have a new impellor but if you order one from anyone of the makers you will not get a gasket or o-ring with it unless you order the complete kit. I made a mistake when I ordered mine from Iboats and when they asked the size I did not know there were two different widths so I'm sending mine back today and getting the right one. By this I mean they ask you if you have the long housing or the short housing. Mine happened to be short.

So, how do you tell the difference? And the width of the impeller?

Hope this helps. The one I received is 1 5/8" wide. The right one for me would be about 1/2 that wide.

As far as time goes... three 3/8 headed bolts to take the rear cover off and three more to take the impeller housing off. Pull the impeller and install the new one per instructions. Done. So easy you can do it in the water, just don't drop anything.

I never heard of 2 different sizes on the standard Cobra. The King Cobra was a little larger impeller.

On the Cobra, I believe there is only one size- -to repeat what others have said. It's easy, pull three bolts off the outer housing and then three more to take off the impeller housing. Get the impeller and the housing; my impeller housing was a little baked on, if you know what I mean.

My OMC Cobra, well she has been good to me. Agreed, the ease of changing impeller is a nice feature about this drive.
