OMC Cobra locked up.

Need some help ya'll.
I was cruising at about 3200 RPM, and the engine (5.7L) cut out. Seemed like I was losing power and then just quit. When I tried to start the engine it wouldn't turn at all.
I got towed back in but didn't get a chance to check anything yet. But I did try to crank it once I got out of the water, and a friend said it looked like the drive was trying to move, like someone was turning the steering wheel. The upper part of the drive was rebuilt professionally a few years ago after the previous owner ran it low on gear oil. I called him and he says it sounds like the same thing that happened to him, bearing seized up.

First thing you do is pull the drive and see if the engine will crank over. If it will, then the drive is the problem. if it doesn;t then there is an engine problem.
Doesn't really matter if the drive or anything else was worked on a few years ago. Things break.

I remember reading that you can replace a cobra drive with a penta. Can't find the thread. On my way down to the boat now to pull the drive and I am pretty sure that one of my dock buddies has a spare penta. Just wondering how much would be involve in putting that on if I have a hard time with my cobra.

There is a lot more to it than just sticking another drive on it, and the Volvo drive has to be one of the SX style drives not the old 290 style. The drive also has to be the correct gear ratio, you will need an engine mounted raw water pump, new shift cable setup, new transom shield pivot housing, and spacers in the trim cylinders.

did someone change the gear oil in the drive since the last time it was run?

Most of the time, if the outdrive was filled incorrectly, the upper gears run dry and either break off or fuse together, locking things up.

Pull the dipstick, if there is no oil, remove the 4 bolts and the top cover to inspect.

Re: OMC Cobra locked up.

I thought I smelled outdrive oil, pulled the boat out and checked. Pulled the drainplug and a little milky oil came out. After draining it I checked the dipstick. It was full. Never struck me that oil rises to the top, or that the level was that high after I drained a little.
When I drained it today it was about 98% water. Pulled the top cover off and the gears look ok, but I can see parts of the bearing mangled up under the gears. Anyone know where I can get a replacement to hold me till the end of the season? :(

If I got a drive for a 4.3, would I be able to change the gears and use it on my V8?
