I'm considering purchasing a 1989 Marlin 17' with the Buick V-6 3.8L and OMC Cobra outdrive. I'm familiar with the older OMC Stinger, but not the cobra.

The outdrive has two corrugated rubber tubes that are about 4" in diameter and mounted within the housing upper and lower. I noticed that when the outdrive is up, the bottom tube has holes across all raised corrugations on the bottom. These look like they could be some kind of wear, but are so even they could also be manufactured. I'd like to hear from anyone who knows this outdrive.

Also, I'd like any advice good or bad as to what to look for on this particular boat. It appears to have no saltwater related problems and other than being stored uncovered with short-term water pooling it seems to be in fine shape. I’ve dug down into the bottom and do not find any dry rot. A minor amount on a connection piece that could be easily replaced is all.

This boat will be used for skiing for a family of four. Is that 3.8L enough?

TIA,

Glenn

Re: OMC Cobra Outdrive & 89 Marlin questions

Those are slits on the bottom of the exhaust bellow, that is OK since some aftermarket ones are like that to reduce backpressure and reduce carbon build up. You have to watch the transom shift cable on the Cobras, it has been updated several times, the newer ones are red. These were known for shifting problems and a lot of them had to have the gearsets replaced because of bad cables. OMC did a recall and eventually replaced the cables and gearsets. If you do a search you will find out all you wanted to know. First find an OMC dealer, and order a shop manual. They can still get most of the parts for Cobras, and a lot is in the aftermarket too. You may have to search around for a shop that will work on it because many will not. Once they are set up right they are really not bad. Check out www.funkopolis.com:8080/~stuart/cobra/ for more detailed info. I did not know that the Cobra came with a 3.8.
