I'm considering purchasing a 1989 Marlin 17' with the Buick V-6 3.8L and OMC Cobra outdrive. I'm familiar with the older OMC Stinger, but not the cobra.

The outdrive has two corrugated rubber tubes that are about 4" in diameter and mounted within the housing upper and lower. I noticed that when the outdrive is up, the bottom tube has holes across all raised corrugations on the bottom. These look like they could be some kind of wear, but are so even they could also be manufactured. I'd like to hear from anyone who knows this outdrive.

Also, I'd like any advice good or bad as to what to look for on this particular boat. It appears to have no saltwater related problems and other than being stored uncovered with short-term water pooling it seems to be in fine shape. Ive dug down into the bottom and do not find any dry rot. A minor amount on a connection piece that could be easily replaced is all.

This boat will be used for skiing for a family of four. Is that 3.8L enough?

TIA,

Glenn
