Omc cobra outdrive clunks on idle

I have a 89 omc cobra outdrive I just rebuilt the upper end all berrings,u-joints,gimbal,bellow and internal berrings well it worked out real well seems to run just fine but last year before the rebuild the boat always seemed to have a clunk at an idle and it still does the same exact thing it only does it about every 5 to 10 seconds it will clunk then another 5 seconds or so it will clunk again and sometimes I will turn the boat off and start it again and it wont do it at all if I speed up to like 1500 rpm or more it seems to go away also. It seems like when I put it in to gear it goes in ok. Does anyone know what this might be? shift cable adjustment or something?
