I have a 88 bayliner with a 4 cylinder omc cobra, I just got it so I don't know much about it but it has a fairly loud grumbleing noise that seems to come from the outdrive/rear eng. area it seems to get loader when I turn the wheel to the left. the noise is there whether in gear or not. what could this be????
thanks

Re: omc cobra outdrive noise

There is a large bearing in there that could be going bad. Also a couple of U-Joints. They go bad with lack of maintenance or water getting in through a leak in the bellows. The drive has to come off. It's fairly easy, just remove the rear tilt cylinders pin and the six nuts holding the drive on and slide it off. Then you can find the culprit. Putting it back on is a bit more tricky.

Gimbal bearing. Change it out before it dynamites. More than likely you'll need a new bellows. While you have it off check u-joints. I don't know how much maint. was done, but if you find water in there plan on replacing the bearing & the u-joints. Also, you must realign everything as it may be thrown off once you change the bearing. You'll never get the drive back on if the alignment isn't dead on.
