After removing my outdrive for inspection and maintenance ,I noticed a length of plastic line(like weed wacker line)in the outdrive where the shift rod is.Kinda wondering where it came from?Could this be part of the shift cable or something? It seems to still shift ok but reverse is a little off ,sometimes I have to lift engine cover and push down on shift linkage to get reverse. Is it a big job to change lower shift cable?

Its past due to be changed if you have to push the linkage.
You will need the OEM service manual for the correct adjustments..
One of the guys has it posted here for download if i can find it...

As far as the plastic weed whip like line goes, nothing like that should be there, could be someone used it like a fish tape to pull a new cable through the transom, can you see the end of it?

It came right out after I removed drive,A buddy told me it could be part of the cable casing,It actually shifts into forward smoother now, but reverse wont engage.

If you keep running it that way be prepared to spend big money replacing the gears in the lower.

I definitely plan on changing it . I just don,t use reverse. It shifts in to forward super smooth ,no grinding at all,so i don,t think I,m hurting it.I ordered the cable today.I can't wait to check out the old cable to see if the line I found in there could have come from the cable! Thanks
