just (this summer) got my first boat. A 1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Bowrider OMC 5.0 Ford.I have worked on my own cars for years. The boat is slipping when you accelerate. ie takes off ok slowly , but when you try to go faster it slips like a cars clutch when it's going out. It doesn't grind or clunk or sound like stripped gears.I have looked at the parts websites diagrams for this outdrive but they don't show anything past the input shaft. Is there a clutch or flex plate or what connects the engine to the outdrive.

Can anyone please help. I don't want to take the whole thing apart if I don't need to.

PS if anyone has an electrical question I'll try to help.

Thanks Rog.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i hate to be the one that brings you the bad news, the problem you describe is the engin coupler, it sits in the bell housing and the engine has to be pulled out of the boat to replace it, if you can pull the motor it is not a hard job or an expensive, if you have to take to a repair shop it is expensive because of the labor. if you do decide to do this yourself, buy a omc engine coupler as the after market brands have been having problems this year, i replaced one that lasted two days, had to do the job all over again and had one irate customer.

Befor you pull the engine try another prop first. There is a rubber hub in most older props. Remove the prop and smell it. If it smells burnt its the hub.

hello
yep check the old prop hub. if the coupler is spun you can place the drive in gear and rotate the prop shaft and the engine wont turn. but check the prop hub first. engine coupler failure will usually leave aluminum shavings in the transome shield area.
good luck and keep posting

RLEWIS. When the coupler is slipping your impeller isn't turning either, so you'll likely begin to overheat.

Do the ez things first. I would suspect the upper gears in the outdrive. Take off the top cap (4 3/8th screws) and look down upon the upper gears ( how's the oil level??) you'll know if they're bad or not! 2nd. Look down from inside the transom and spock out the engine coupler (attached to the flywheel) and the input shaft from the outdrive that goes into the coupler. Take some white typwriter "white out" or fingernail polish and mark the shaft and coupler in roughly the same position. Run the engine and duplicate the "slipping", recheck the marks, if they are in the same position, that's not your problem. 3rd, do the same to the inner splined shaft and outer hub of the prop, run and then inspect, One of these should lead you to the correct answer!! Good luck!

I agree about the easiest thing first idea, but I really doubt you'll find bad gears - they clunk and grind. The very easiest thing to do, and I think the most likely, is the prop hub. Put the boat in gear (engine off of course) and try to spin the prop by hand. The leg can be tilted up if you need to. The prop should turn easily one way, but not at all the other. Watch the hub when you turn the blades. Good luck. BTW a prop shop can re-hub a prop.
