I just (this summer) got my first boat. A 1988 Bayliner Capri 1950 Bowrider OMC 5.0 Ford.I have worked on my own cars for years. The boat is slipping when you accelerate. ie takes off ok slowly , but when you try to go faster it slips like a cars clutch when it's going out. It doesn't grind or clunk or sound like stripped gears.I have looked at the parts websites diagrams for this outdrive but they don't show anything past the input shaft. Is there a clutch or flex plate or what connects the engine to the outdrive.

Can anyone please help. I don't want to take the whole thing apart if I don't need to.

PS if anyone has an electrical question I'll try to help.

Thanks Rog.

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive - Somethings slipping

There's a coupler off the back of the flywheel that's basically a shaft coupling embedded in rubber. It's what drives the shaft on the O/D. There's also a rubber shock ring inside the prop. I'd suspect a spun prop before I'd suspect the motor coupler, but it could be either...

Try looking at the OMC explodeds at Doug Russell They're good for identifying particular parts.

Roger

Scribe aligned marks on the prop and its hub. Check if it's moved after you have a slipping incident. That will tell you if the prop is slipping.
