I have a 1989 Bayliner w/351 Windsor OMC Cobra w/ outdrive. I launched it yesterday and when I shifted it to reverse it would not go into reverse. I tried forward and the same happened. The cables all look and seem to be working from the shifter to the engine and down to the out drive. What could be wrong.?
Thenks
HD1

Re: OMC Cobra Outdrive

If all the cables indeed appear to be working, I'd first suspect a loose bolt on the bellcrank lever. That would allow the cables to move, but the drive not shift. You'd be effectively doing everything except moving the bellcrank which would shift the drive

You're going to have to remove the drive to check it though.

-Roger

CCREW: THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. I PROBABLY WAS NOT CLEAR ENOUGH ABOUT THE CABLES. WHEN I TRY TO SHIFT, THE SHIFT LEVER ONLY MOVES A LITTLE BIT. IT IS NOT MOVING LIKE IT IS GOING TO GO INTO GEAR, I CAN SEE MOVEMENT AT THE PIVOT POINT ON THE ENGINE, ALSO LOOKING AT THE CABLES FROM THE SHIFTER END IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS TRYING TO WORK BUT DOES NOT. HOPE THIS ISNT CONFUSING.
THANKS
HD1

Hd - You'll get a better response in the I/O section. This is for boats.

HD1...first thing to do is to eliminate the remote control and long cable. At the shift bracket on the engine disconnect the lower shift cable(goes to the outdrive, hopefully Red) then see if the remote contol has a full range of movement and the shift bracket moves accordingly. If it does then you may have a sticky lower shift cable or something wrong in the outdrive.
