OMC Cobra Reverse Problem

We have a 1990 Sunbird w/ a 2.3 Ford, OMC Cobra. It will not lock into reverse. We have replaced the lower shifting cable and followed all of the ajustments in the OMC Cobra repair manual. It still will not work. Forward is ok. We have been told that it could be the reverse gear and clutch dog. When we starting looking for parts they do not match up. Ours have 3 dogs not 6 like we have found. Can we determine the year of the lower unit by the serial #? Serial # 985683, model # T0658960. Is there something else that we might be not doing ?

well, First did you try to manually lock it into Reverse when the Lower Unit was pulled away from Transom ? The shifter control is on the right side ( i think ) when you did your cable you would have had to move that shifter shaft that comes up from Lower gear case. Did you try and manually lock that shaft in ? Im not sure on the Arrangement of Dogs but im sure the Serial Numbers would help..YES.

I think we have to do an identify process here.I thought OMC only used 2.3 Fords in the late 80's.I am doing an estimate on a 1988 V8,and while reverse gear is available by its self,you can only order a clutch dog as a gear set Forward and pinion. That leads me to wonder abut the 3 dog/6dog thing.Sunbird sold many boats,what are the last digits in the hull number?Right now I have a RENKEN,1987,stringer drive in the shop hope I never see another.<br /><br />Merc does a three dog / six dog thing but not on sterndrives<br />DHP<br />DHP

Thank you for your response, Here is more info that I have. When the boat is off and in reverse you can not turn the prop manually. When you have the boat running and put it in reverse it rachets. The hull # on the boat is SB2C0102A090. The numbers I found on the motor are on an OMC tag, Model #232BMRMED serial # T1113497. There is a tag below this that has the other model # and serial # that I posted yesterday. Why wouldI have 2 sets of numbers for the lower unit?
