OMC Cobra Shift Actuator and ESA Question

I have a 1986 Renken 2050 which has a 5.7 liter OMC Cobra stern drive. I have completed the adjustments per the Hastings' post, but I have a question regarding how the shift actuator and ESA module operate together. On my Cobra, the shift actuator arm does not ride up the V to engage the ESA when I shift it in reverse. However, it does when I shift it into forward. My question is, does the ESA need to be activated when shifting into forward or reverse from neutral. I know it must be activated when shifting from forward or reverse into neutral. I have attached a picture of the shift mechanism on my cobra as a reference so you have an idea of what I'm talking about.

It only needs to operate coming out of gear. If you are testing this out of the water on muffs, it may not function at all becuase there is no water load on the gears trying to be pulled apart.

The arm shouldn't move when the boat is running out of the water, if it does, then you may have a problem with the shift cable or binding in the shifting mechanism. You can still test it by moving the lever with the v notch manually to trip the switch, if the engine stumbles, you should be good.

Re: OMC Cobra Shift Actuator and ESA Question

Thank you, this is something I would not have guessed. This cable adjustment is confusing. I replaced the shift cable and used a fish scale to test the amount of force, and it was under 2.5 lbs, both directions. It is also idling at 650 rpm in gear, out of water, so I do not know what is causing this. I am going to take it to the lake in a couple of weeks to test it. I know it should be easy to shift, but what else should I be looking for, e.g., noises?

Oh, and I installed a new ESA(five degree version) and it "tumbles" the engine when I manually engage the lever.

Any advice is appreciated.

Go out on the water and watch it while someone shifts the boat. My bet is that it will work fine.
