So I found a shift adjustment tool and the following is the description.....

***SHIFT CABLE TOOL IS MARKED AT 6".***

***THIS MEASUREMENT IS MEANT TO GET THE ADJUSTMENT CLOSE, SINCE YOU NEED TO FINE TUNE THE CABLE WHEN INSTALLING***

Plastic Tool Kit
Bellcrank Alignment Plate and Shift Cable Tool

FOR OMC COBRA 1986-1993 ONLY
OEM Part Numbers: 914017 915271

This sounds like a disclaimer to me. “ meant to get the adjustment close” ....

Should I keep looking?

My jigs say the same 6" but if you line the side of the barrel Trunion up with the 6" line you come out with 6 1/2 " which is the correct length. Your adjustment should come at the control cable Not the transom cable . That is where the cables attach to the bracket.

I also have a tool market at 6 inches and I agree the 6 inches should get you close. You fine tune the setting with the
detailed procedure for example : OMC SERVICE TRAINING SHIFT SYSTEM ADJUSTMENTS for "KW- RG"(1986-1991)
CLUTCH DOG MODELS
