Does anyone have any good info on adjusting the shift cables on '89 OMC Cobra drive (5.7 litre engine).

I have an '89 Four Winns 285 Vista, and the shifting gets very difficut at time. Sometimes it seems OK, but other times I have to practically put half my weight on the levers or jam them swiftly to get them to shift.

I'm not sure if its a cable problem, or just and adjustment. The guy I bought this boat off of a couple of years ago, said that he had the "modification" from Four Winns installed several years ago (as this was a known problem that was fixed by OMC).

Any thought, suggestions, tips ??

Thanks.

-David

I just had the exact same problem on my '91. It was resolved by replacing an electronic switch on the engine (near where the cable attachs to the carb) that cuts out the engine momentarily when you shift. When it is working inermittently or not at all, shifting is extremely hard.

Hey david, you may also have the rpms a little high! i have 88 omc cobra small block chevy, and my rpms were at about 900 at idle, and i had the same problems. i backed the idle down to about 600 and everything was good! good luck
