OMC Cobra - Slipping?

I just brought home a 1990 20 footer with a 4.3 powering a Cobra drive. On our maiden voyage the engine RPMs began to increase while SOG decreased and eventually we fell off step. No wierd noises or vibrations. It idles fine. Shifting does feel stiff. It does not chatter shifting into gear forward or reverse. I intend to clean and lube the through transom shift cable and check adjustment. It feels like it is slipping similiar to loosing traction while driving your car on snow. I checked the prop and it is solid. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this symptom. I'm hoping I did not wear out the clutch dogs.

Sounds like a spun hub on the prop.

The symptom of the clutch dogs failing is a clunk clunk noise. Like Don said. it sounds like a prop hub slip.

Don't bother lubing the transom shift cable...replace it.
