I have an 88 23' chaparral. Bought it without the engine long block. All the parts were with it. I assembled and reinstalled. Shifted like crap from the start. All ESA functions work. Traced it to a crappy transom shift cable. I thought..

What i need to know is what angle does the transom shift cable enter the boat from the rear. I had no reference because the engine was out. I susPect the rubber hose the shift cable travels through is incorrectly routed. Mine at present is sanwiched at an upward angle over the exhaust y-pipe and under the rear engIne plate.

Plese someone tell me how this hose should route. At this point i see no way to make it work unless i pull engine out again and run the hose under the exhaust.

Is this correct?

Hi, my chappy is covered at the moment and it's snowing out so a pic at this time is not happening sorry, although I will tell you that the cable sheath is tight, I've been there too. Mine is a 90 with a 5.8 and the cable comes up right between the steering cable and the manifolds, maybe later I'l get a pic for ya if it clears up a little.

This is a major help. Thats how mine is. I fought for an hour trying to put that cable in. Any tips on installation? Which end to install first?

Do you have the pivot housing off?
Here is what I did but before pushing thru put alittle liquid dish soap on it should slid right thru. Make sure you have just alittle of the cable sticking out before sliding thru so you do not mess up cable end.

No, pivot housing is still on. I was hoping to push it through far in enough to start the threads and leave it on. Is this possible? Also i didn't know that end came off. It will go with that off im sure. I knew it couldn't make the turn with 4" solid cable at each end.:) i feel a little stupid.

Don't feel stupid I tried before and could not get thru nobody said to take off the end. I just tried it and came right off after I ruined the first transom cable I bought. If you are changing transom cable you do need to check the bell crank setting any how 90dg.s. I have heard of people changing while the pivot housing still on but the nut on that end is soliid does not spin so maybe you can but you would have to spin the whole cable to do it.

I got it in. Went right through with the end off. I left the pivot housing on. I threaded it through no problem. The cable spun for me. I checked the angle of the bellcrank. It looks like 90 dgr to me. When the bolt is tightened into the flat area it seems like a perfect 90. I greased all the bellcrank bushings and the plastic end piece looks good. Ive read how to set it which i will try tomorrow. Any advice? Maybe the short and sweet on adjustment? I can look at the pdf i have to add to whAt you suggest.
