OMC Cobra upper gearcase question

I have an OMC Cobra outdrive. I was running my boat and it all the sudden stopped. I tried to turn the motor over but it was locked up momentarly. I finally got the boat started back up and limped it to shore. I checked the oil in the outdrive and noticed it was not reading on the dipstick. I had some oil with me in the boat so I filled it up. I ran the boat and it seemed to run fine. Later that weekend I pulled the top cover off so I could inspect the upper gearcase. There was alot of metal flecks in the oil. I noticed that the gears looked fine but I could see where the main drive gear had chewed into the side of the housing a little bit........My question is , should I replace the upper unit gear, bearing assembly? Should I flush clean oil through it and run the boat since the gears appear to be fine? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: OMC Cobra upper gearcase question

sounds like a berring is shot or it wouldn't have alowed the gear to get over far enough to get into the houseing. The presence of metal flakes indicates serious trouble. I wouldn't run this boat anymore till you address this situation. If your gears are good, you're not in as deep as you could be. Take it to a mechenic...............Jerry
