OMC Cobra, will not go out of reverse when running

I had some problems with shifting. Mechanic replaced cable from top of engine down to gears. Now it will not go out of gear, until I shut engine off.

Anyone got any ideas on what is wrong? I want to make sure I can be specific on what should be looked at.

They can not get to look at it for another week. I would like to use it over the 4th. but will have to be careful about using reverse.

It sounds like the lower shift cable still needs some adjustment or your ESA is not working. How high are your RPM's when in gear? You want them down around 650, this helps shifting as well. If you have some time you may want to read through this website as it gives some history and some helpful tips on Cobra shifting http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/index.html

Sorry...this darn link url thing is not working for me, you'll need to cut and paste this into your browser.

If your idle is too high, you will definetly have this problem.
Not the only cause, but a starting point.

while the engine is running push the micro switch on the shift linkage by the carb. if the idle stumbles the cable needs adjusting. if the idle doesnt stumble, then the switch needs to be replaced. make sure its idleing at 650 -700 or youll be buying new gears faster than saying 1600 bucks plus labor!

Howdy,

#1 get yourself a manual if you're thinking about trying a little adjustment yourself. (And of course read the hastings site. too!)

The Electronic Shift Assist system reduces the torque on the shift "dogs" by "pulsing" the ignition A+ (12v) line to the coil.

This allows the torque to pulse on the shift "dog clutch" and/or on the shift dog (to pull and/or push it out of gear) it comes out of gear when the torque is "pulsed".

If the ESA isn't pulsing when you try to shift it out of gear it will be VERY hard(or impossible) to pull it out of gear.

The torque is minimal when it's in gear, out of the water....so shifting it with the engine running on muffs out of the water won't tell you anything!

WITH THE ENGINE OFF OFF OFF , You can have someone rotate the prop backwards and another person slowly move the shift control into forward and see how the shift linkage works.
Also, have the person hold "pressure" (torque) on the prop to see if the ESA linkage actuates when going back to Neutral.

(If it's in FORWARD gear, have them hold prop-torque in the reverse direction....if it's in REVERSE gear , have them hold torque on the prop in the forward direction while shifting back to NEUTRAL) . You should be able to see the ESA linkage operate.

The ESA linkage should actuate before the lower shift cable moves the clutch dogs. This allows the ESA to work to prior to having having enough force to shift the unit out of gear.

The ESA is controlled by a mechanism on the starbord side the carbureter.

I hope this helps. The main thing wrong with the OMC Cobra is OMC went out of business. Some people nowadays that only work on the other sterndrives are simply not familiar enough with the Cobras and/or don't know how to adjust them. Some others just don't want to learn. If you let them work on it, you may be replacing gears and/or possibly replacing the drive ! Ensure the person adjusting your drive knows what he/she is doing!

Cheers,

Rick

btw, I tried to use the spell check feature on this site and it turned everything into gobbledygook!....so if nothing made sense on this post that's what happened. I had to edit it a couple of times! I thought I was losing my mind!8)
