OMC Coil problems Please help I am lost

I am having problems with a 1992 Fourwinns 302 with OMC out drive. The coils keep popping on me to the point where the oil comes spraying out. If ran hard enough some times it causes the electronics in the distributor damage. Could the in-line resistor be defective and causing this problem? If so is there away to test the in-line resistor or what tests can be performed to see if there is my problem?

See what the voltage is at the coil while running. If it's battery voltage, your ballast resistor is not present or bypassed...this is of course that your system requires a ballast resistor.

What are the conditions of your spark plug wires and are your plugs gapped correctly? The energy in the coil has to be released somewhere. If your wires are bad or your gap is too large, that can be hard on the coil.

Make sure the Neg. post off the coil feeds the distributor.

Only on a negative ground system, if it's positive ground (like some old fords) then it would be the Positive wire going to the dist (ground).

It's a good point to check, or replace, your spark plug wires, Also make sure your coil has a good clean ground.
