omc coming out of gear

Have a 87'OMC cobra 5.0. At low rpm's have forward and reverse, raise rpm's and comes out of gear. Any help would be great.

When it comes out of gear is there a clunk or any noise?
Or does it just feel like its slipping?

No noise just feels like slipping back into neutral. This started all of a sudden at the end of last year. We were 3/4 throttle and then in neutral. Felt like a cable snapped.I replaced the transom shift cable and set it to factory specks. The lower unit was rebuilt 2 years ago. (I just bought the boat last year). Plenty of gear oil in outdrive.

sounds like the prop hub slipping - try another prop

Thanks Howard, you were right, spun prop. I never look for the "easy fix", always figure it's a big problem.
