i have a 1985 110hp evinrude and am using the origianal controls to operate it. the problem im having is with the tilt and trim button. sometimes it works on the first push of the button and most times you have to play with it to get it to work. is that part replacable or must i buy the whole control unit to get rid of this problem? thanks for your help in advance, and thanks for the all the advice you guys have given me in the past. you guys have saved me a ton of money.

The trim switch is still available ib. PN 395821.

Are we sure it's the switch that's bad? Have you checked the relays and sockets? May just need a cleaning. If you pull the cover off the relay box and have someone work the switch, you can hear if the relays pick up. Makes a faint click sound. If the relays pick up evertime the switch is pushed, up or down, the problem may lie elsewhere.

Hey ibgood,

I was a newbie not to long ago, OBJ and the other guys have helped me a lot.

I took my handle apart where the trim button is and cleaned it out with electrical contact cleaner.
There was sand n stuff up in mine, the cleaner took care of it.
Make sure the ignition is off when you do this, no batteries turned on just to be safe.

Trigger

Re: omc controls problem with tilt and trim

When the switch on my control wouldn't work, I assumed it was the switch. The buttons on the engine worked, so that validated my original diagnosis. When it would not trim up at all, I decided to do something about it. Found out it was the relay by switching out relays from my F-250. Got replacements at the auto parts store and it has worked flawlessly since.
