Neighbor has a 95 evin. with side mounted controls. Controls trim switch went bad and needs replacement. Not my boat so I dont want to start pushing and pulling and damage something. Question, what does it take to get the switch out of the handle? thanks fred

You have to remove the handle, and take it apart from the back side. You really want a manual to tackle that control box. With out looking, I believe the information is in the assessoy manual.

I don't want to get anyone in over their head, but here goes.I just looked at the diagram for a 1995 control box.

Unbolt the control from the side of the boat. There is a screw (probably hex head) that holds the shift handle to the box, from the unseen side.Loosen it a few turns, hit it with a smack, remove screw. This should release the handle from the splines, and leave the handle in your lap.Now you can take the handle apart and swap out the switch, which unplugs beneath the control.Reassemble and you are done.

Good Luck !

DHP

DHP nailed it but do support the control box with small blocks of wood or your knees. The handle does need room to break free and then finish unscrewing the allen screw. Also use Loctite on the threads as that bugger can, will, and HAS come loose before!
Goodluck!
TM
