Changing the oil for first time on used 1988 5.7, Ionly pumped out about 3 qts, and it only took 3 qts to fill(engine level). It had an auto block in it before. I'm wondering if this dipstick is also off the car engine. From bottom of pan to top of dipstick tube is 25 inches, stick is 21.5 inches, so it seems close, but where ti the other 2 qts of oil? Does anyone know the correct length of marine dipstick? thx

If you dont have the right dipstick tube for a marine engine that goes to the bottom of the oil pan you will not be able to pump it all out ?

Re: omc dipstick length

need someone with an omc 5.7 to please measure their dipstick, I think. that will rule out one possible problem as to why only 3 qts, and shows full on stick

You could fill the engine to 1Qt. low. Run engine let set for a few min.. Mark dipstick, I always used a file, and put a notch on the side. (Clean off the dipstick before inserting back into the tube) Than fill to full and do the same as a qt. low. Now you know were the correct levels are for this engine. I've done this for years, because most dipsticks are not that accuate to begin with.

One more thing. Make sure that the engine is empty of oil.

daddyo, that is the problem, not sure if empty- pump sucking air, banging on side of pan sounds empty. but unless I can pull the drain-plug, which is impossible; I will be paranoid; Jaspers long blocks not cheap

Pump the oil out again (oil is cheap compared to Jaspers) then pull the oil pan drain plug out and drain the rest.

Now add the correct amount of oil,run it and mark the stick.

Sorry, didn't see your last post. Some drainplugs can't be removed, but can be loosened and let drip/drain.

With the oil pumped out, slip a piece of 5/16 rubber hose over the dipstick tube and blow thru it. You should be able to tell if it's empty by the amount of restriction from blowing in it.

I have a ’90 OMC 5.7 and the total length of the dipstick from end to end is 33”. The flat metal section is 29” long and the top line of the safe mark is 1 5/16” from the tip. The handle is orange. My dipstick tube has the threaded adaptor on the top that takes a standard marine siphon pump but I didn’t crawl all the way in there and measure it.

can't see it , even with a mirror, but drain plug with dipstick tube attached, feels like tube ends up in an round fitting that uses a longer drain plug, like with holes in it, like a brake fitting to a caliper. worried about, since it will be only by feel, are there copper o-rings that will mislodge if I loosen the fitting just enough to let it drip the oil into the bilge?

Re: omc dipstick length

Visit a hardware store and by about three feet of plastic tubing (usually called food quality) much like the tubing used on ice cube makers in refrigerators. It fits down the dipstick tube. Now suck out the remaining oil using whatever creative means at hand to attach the tubing to the pump. It will take longer to pump but it has worked for me. Refill with the correct amount of oil. Using a file, mark the full point on the current dipstick. But then I'm a cheapskate so you may want to fight the existing setup.

the saga continues; a $12 walmart handpump works better than a $40 jabsco. pumped it out, and managed to loosen the drain/dipstick plug. let it alone until stopped dripping. 5 qt pan, added 4 gallons, and it shows 1.5 qt overfilled! grrrrr going to redrain and try again, makes no sense.

When you think it's empty,if you will just pucker-up and blow into the dipstick tube you WILL know if it's empty or not.

I did, reel; it seemed empty. I can't see how it made it so far, seeming to have 4 qts, when it needed 6. wish i could find the guy that sold this boat to son-in-law
