Omc drive problem I think

I have an 89 omc 2.3 that I had out and was cruising along. No trouble all day, went for a ride down the river Before heading to the dock when I felt a thud down by the prop. I thought I hit a log and thought I should be more careful driving. It happened about 5 minutes later, so I shut it down and idled back to the dock. I am thinking I was slipping a gear and the thump I felt was it catching again. I am mechanically inclined, not to the extent of some of you in this forum, but is there some basic checks I can look at before calling a pro?

I drained the gear lube, it was not milky and was free of metal shavings.

Need more info. What drive do you have? Did it only happen twice? Is it still running or still slipping? Is your prop hub spun?

It is a cobra drive. It happened twice and did not happen when I idled back to the dock. I have spun props on other boats so I am 99% sure it wasn't that. I am going to run it tomorrow at home and see if i can produce the same issue.

Don't run it any more. Sounds like your lower shift cable is way out of adjustment or has already failed. The thud you feel is the dog clutch disengaging. What you are feeling is bad news. Hopefully its not too late for your dog clutch.
