I'm taking off my 86 cobra drive for the first time. I have the manual, the alignment tool, and have built a dolly I saw on this web site. My only question is,Does anyone have a rough idea how much it weights? I am a little concerned that as soon as it's off the bolts that it may be more than a handful. To me it looks like about 100 lbs but the manual says if your going to lift with an eye screw and winch it should be able to suppolt 500lbs. Big difference. Thanks

Re: OMC drive weight

It's around 100 lbs, never weighed one.
I just let them all the way down with the trim cylinders off. See how much room is between the skeg and the ground and put a block of wood that justs lifts the drive a bit. This supports it so all you have to do is steady it. Keep your fingers out of the ujoints (they bite hard).

I never weighed one but since I can lift it by myself, I figure it is close to 100 pounds. I can lift the Volvo Duo Prop by myself as well which is a little heavier. I always take the props off to make life a little easier...especially with the stainless dual props.

Re: OMC drive weight

Thank you guys so much. I don't know what people would do without the help from folks that have been there. The book says to support drive shaft as it comes out so I'm planning on heavy leather gloves so it does not come banging down. I'm planning on keeping the drive in the cellar for our 6 mo of winter up here in maine. Ernie

It's gonna be harder to get it in the celler and back out in the spring than to get it off and on the boat. Once you get it off the boat, you will begin to understand those ujoints and how they can get you.

Re: OMC drive weight

Just pulled my drive. It's not bad, lift with your back, don't let it tip over too far.

U-joints bit the $#!#@#!@ outta my finger when I was trying to grease them. Slippery bastiges.
