I have a 1978 Grady White with an OMC sterndrive. What is odd is that the motor is not mounted to any lifting cradle. It's mounted to fabricated mounts on the hull. The guy the gave me the boat said that it was this way when he got it 15 years ago. The sterndrive lifts and rotates back and forth OK. It looks as though they would just raise the sterndrive to trim the boat. Before I rebuild the motor I was wondering if there are any problems with this set up.

Ayuh,... Sounds like ya got an ole Non-trimable stringer drive...

It has Tilt Only...
Run it Only full down, or yer ball gears will be trashed...

If they were tilting the drive for trim, the ball gears might be chewed up already. Agree with Bond-O, but some pics would help.

Re: OMC engine mount

My experience was that if I forgot to tilt full down after leaving the shallow dock area, the prop thrust instantly overran the tilt clutch pack and seated the outdrive when I "punched it".
But, I was running 300+ hp in a 5.7, possibly a lesser powered engine might not do that.

Mine did that for awhile with a measly 140hp, but the clutch pack was shot ;)
