So I have this nice new to us 1989 17' boat with a 2.3l OMC and I find today that my exhaust manifold is cracked (pn 986041). Talk with my boat guy and he informs me that nobody makes this part anymore??? Other than some outfit in Australia who is making one in stainless steel for a mere $2200.00.
Who if anyone out there might be a place to find this part?

Re: OMC Exhaust Manifold

Howdy,

Well, it helps if you post the year and model number. Please see this thread

I suppose you're talking about #36 below from Doug Russell

Although they post a part number and price for that manifold you may not be able to buy one.

It's sort of like the 460. They only made them for about 3 years. They were discontinued around 1990 and the after market doesn't make them because there's not enough of them out there to justify the tooling and manufacture. You may have to put a different engine in the boat or get a used one from a Boat Bone Yard. But what you find may be in worse shape than what you're taking off!

This is why when asked, most of us on here suggest NOT buying an OMC powered boat of any year....

Sorry about that...

Regards,

Rick

What is the purpose and importance of part # 35 SEAL AY,EXHAUST. I notice while taking off my cracked exhaust manifold that this part is missing from mine?

That "Seal" is also known as a "Shutter"

It basically helps to prevent water from running back up into the exhaust manifold on rapid slow-downs which could cause a hydro-lock.

Thanks Rick

Sounds like I ought to put a new one back in, assuming I find a new exhaust manifold first.
