Hello everyone.

Well, finally got to the lake, well, no.....finally got to drive the boat at the lake, for more than 30 seconds. The first trip, the outdrive locked up. Fixed that, among other things. The went to the lake. Boat ran great.

It is a 72 IMP Aztec. 307 chevy, OMC Electric Stringer.

It ran great, pulled good, handled well.......the BANG!!!!! pop pop pop sputter bang etc......it was still pulling, and going.....nothing in the red...no smoke......headed for the dock......

long story short, cracked an exhaust manifold. left hand side. The welder says he cannot fix it.

So, does anyone have one of the antiques laying around?

Thanks,

Jon

Might be more to this- compression test the engine before going any further.

exhaust manifolds crack as a result of another problem. Usually freezing/improper winterizing, but overheating and mishandling can crack them.

Manifolds, when they do actually fail, succumb to corrosion, usually internal and that wouldn't appear as a crack.

"Port" and "Starbord" better terminology than left and right when you go manifold shopping.

I think BARR still makes those manifolds.
Is this it?

Re: OMC Exhaust manifold

Well, it may have been corriosion, probably was in fact, the cast iron was only about 1/16th of an inch thick. But it is cracked all the way around now.....came off in 2 pieces.

Yes, that is the correct manifold. And, if someone on here doesn't have one laying around, then I will order one next week. This has been an interesting project. bought it off of E-bay. gave $500.00 for it....probably have close to another $1000.00 in it. Upper gearcase bearing, seals, transom seal, carb kit, interior, wireing harness, fluids, and a service manual.

The biggest problem I have had, through the whole experience, is the whole "it is a boat, it is harder to work on, and soooooooo different from anything else" I will agree, it is a boat. But it is just a mechanical thing. A little thought, some good service info, some hunting for parts, and a little common sence, and you can work on it.

Anyway, thanks for your reply, and I really hope someone has one laying around. because if they don't give/sell it to me than one day, the wife, the girlfriend, the landlord, the city, or just the gotta clean up bug is going to send it to the junk. It won't do any good there. I have come to enjoy the whole OMC vs Everything else thing. Kinda like Ford vs Chevy. I like IH's myself.

Re: OMC Exhaust manifold

you don't want a used manifold. You should be dancing in the streets to find new parts like that for a 1972 OMC. If you plan on using the boat buy 2 new Barr manifolds while you still can. The Barr price is a steal.
