I have two 1978 omc 185's, I am asuming that these are 400stringer's, but not sure, the manual says for that year to use the bolt on flushing that attachs to the top of the sterndrive, can you use rabbit ears to flush the omc's?????

Yeah you can but you'd be better off ponying up for a couple of OMC flush attachments that replace one of the tilt trunion caps. They show up on ebay all the time and are so much more positive and convenient that MM ears.

And yes your '78's are stringers. 400's were for dinky engines, the 800's were for the V8's. They would also be the hydro-mechanical variety as opposed to the electric shift or full mechanical shifters.

muffs fan here... (rabbit ears?...from your TV?... kidding- but that's a new one to me)
:)
$8 and they work just as well as that flushing attachment and they work on any outboards and such you might also have or ever get

1978 185 would be an 800 series stern drive

I've got the flushing adapter and LOVE IT!

One thing though... Don't forget to put the cap back on when you launch! Your temp guage will get a work out!

Re: omc flushing

friend of mine had an omc. He bought a prestone flush adaptor and splice it inline with the intake hose at the engine. Works perfect and you can leave it in place. Hook up the garden hose and flush it. When you are done put the cap back on it and go.

Re: omc flushing

ok - who sent me the bad karma?

Was just using my muffs and the brass hose part blew right out of the rubber - I was inside the boat and felt the manifold and it was hot...looked over the transom and the water is spraying across the driveway....

I hope my impeller is ok - geez....

I'm changing to the flush adapter team

Re: omc flushing

sorry kjdkjd must have been me ha ha, talk about karma, you all know I'm working on restoring this 1978 reinell w/twin omc185's, well finally got everything working and replaced that I found that was bad, started the motors up, and everything works great, oil pressures are up, not getting hot or anything, after 1oyrs of sitting, I thought great. so I gunked the engines, and started them up to get the smell off, and now one of the motors has water in the oil!!!! I could have gotten some water in the motor from pressure washing I hope, its not that much in there, but as soon as I seen it I shut it off, I know warming the engine will burn it out, but I think I'll do another oil change on it, cant hurt. will head gaskets go bad from sitting to long?? should I try tighten the head bolts??

Re: omc flushing

flush adapter !! if you have a "185" then you should have a chev. 5.0 v-8 and that would give you the 800 stringers, the 400 was for the four cylinder. my omc has 185 on the valve covers, a 305 chevy. althogh without looking in the book a 185 could also be the ford 302, v8. dist in the front- ford, in the back of boat, its the chevy

Re: omc flushing

I've not experienced head gaskets failing from sitting, but anything's possible sort of. I would change the oil a couple times and rerun it.

Went for a run on the lake - my impeller seems ok - loosened the hose at the thermostat hsg - and a good spray out of there at idle.

Fords were either 175, 190 (with 2 bbls) or 200 ish with a 4 bbl.

Re: omc flushing

yeah boom thats what I was thinkin but couldnt remember, it sure is odd with the almost same displacement, 302-305, the horse power differences between ford and gm, I guess displacement really does'nt matter, its all in valving, carburation and the minut technology differences between the two

I've been looking all over for one of those hose adapters, haven't been able to find one anywhere. May have to splice my own :p

Re: omc flushing

I looked for a trunnion cap with the adapter, couldn't find one easily so made my own. I drilled a 3/8" hole, tapped it to 1/4" NPT and put a 1/4" NPT/hose barb fitting in, clamped a 1' piece of garden hose on with a female coupler end. When I'm done flushing, I remove it and put in a threaded brass plug. It has worked well for many years.
