OMC Gasket Compound - when to use?

Engine in question is an '84 Rude 140, and I'm using the factory manual. For some gaskets the manual specifically says to use gasket compound, for others it specifically says not to, and then there are some gaskets that it doesn't even mention. Specifically I'm wondering about the bypass cover gaskets, but also wonder if there's a general rule as far as when to use gasket compound and when not to (obviously it won't get used on carb or intake gaskets where there's a chance of fouling an air passage).

If there is a general rule of thumb, I'd say use it on any gaskets where they are sealing against water passages, unless specifically told not to (head gaskets). I would not use on any intake gaskets like reed plate, bypass covers, carburetor, etc.

Also use a heavy application on screw threads where corrosion may be a problem.

I know one thing for sure, do NOT use it on carburetors; especially between the body and bowl cover. Go ahead and ask me how I know. :)

Yep, I learned that one quite a few years ago when I was racing go-carts (and I had to learn the hard way too).

Thanks F_R.

You should use gasket sealer on most block gaskets if not noted. The bypass covers need sealer. Gasket sealer also seals water and airleaks, so it will be used on most block gaskets, such as crank head covers, exhaust covers, powerhead base gasket, rectifier/regulator, etc, except where noted. (head gaskets are an exception) Remember to put sealer sparingly on the outer edge of all seals. (not the lip of the seal, but the outer metal part.)
