OMC gasket sealer substitute

I'm geting ready to replace the water pump and T-stat in my '78 Johnson 35hp. The manual calls for The OMC stuff. Is there a suitable replacement for the sealer I could get locally at NAPA or other parts store? I also just scored two more cherry motors. A 1978 9.9 Johnson and a 1984 15hp electric start. Both have been sitting for 20 years. Bringing them back to life will be my summer projects.

NAPA will have gasket sealing compound. I assume you need it for the t stat housing gasket?

Yes, the housing and the bolt threads.

The Permatex/Locktite/NAPA brands will be fine. I just hate working with the nasty black stuff. Got a Mercury shop nearby? See if they still carry Perfect Seal #4, which is very similar to the OMC sealer

Permatex aviation is authorized by OMC as a sub for warranty repairs.

Thanks everyone. I found the Permatex Aviation stuff. Now I'm bracing myself for the problems that will come from splitting a motor that I believe hasn't been apart in 34 years.

Hi Doubles Shooter. I'm in the same boat (so to speak). Where did you find the Permatex Aviation gasket sealant? Do you know it can it be used below the waterline as a gear case sealant?

Get the 3m 847 for that, it is a fantastic product, it really is.

I'm sorry it took so long getting back to you. Been doing yard work.
I got the sealer at NAPA. I don't know about under water use.
